IHG Hotels & Resorts and Mayapada Group double down on growth in Bali

IHG Hotels & Resorts

IHG Hotels & Resorts has signed a two-property agreement with leading Indonesian conglomerate Mayapada Group that doubles the companies’ strategic partnership to four hotels in Bali.

The collaboration will introduce Voco hotels – IHG’s fastest-growing premium brand – to Indonesia with the newly-built Voco Bali Seminyak in 2024, and also open a second Holiday Inn Express property on the island following the conversion of an existing building to Holiday Inn Express Bali Sunset Road.

It’s another milestone in the relationship between IHG, which has more than 6,000 hotels in over 100 countries, and Mayapada Group, the owner of financial services, media, retail, and real estate businesses, following the recent openings of InterContinental Bali Sanur Resort and Holiday Inn Bali Sanur.

Patrick Finn, Vice President, Development, South East Asia & Korea, IHG said: “IHG has been in Indonesia since 1995 and has developed dedicated resources and capabilities that offer our teams a unique understanding of the market from both a domestic and international perspective. Our agreement with Mayapada Group complements our existing estate and enables us to strengthen our presence as a market leader in this key destination where we have seven open hotels and four properties in the pipeline.

“We want to offer something for every type of visitor, whether they stay in one of our hotels for leisure or business, or a combination of both. We share a commitment to developing high-quality, best-in-class properties and experiences, and are delighted to introduce voco Bali Seminyak – the first voco property in Indonesia and a perfect fit for Seminyak with its bold and charming nature – and Holiday Inn Express Sunset Road, which will champion simple, smart travel for people on the go.”

Victoria Tahir, President Director, of Mayapada Hospitality added: “Bali is one of the world’s top travel destinations where demand is returning strongly as travelers once again seek to explore its unique beauty and wonders. “IHG has proven to be a strong strategic partner for Mayapada Group, especially during the pandemic when it showed great agility in delivering bespoke solutions for our properties. Having seen the success of its cluster operations model in various markets, we’re keen to adapt it for our four Bali properties to maximize their performance and achieve sustainable growth.”

Having celebrated the global milestone of 100 signed and opened properties, IHG’s premium brand voco hotels is growing at a phenomenal pace around the world and achieving high levels of guest satisfaction. Notable openings this year will include voco Paris Porte De Clichy in the French capital, a brand debut in Japan with voco Osaka Central, and its introduction to Vietnam through voco Ma Belle Danang.

The new-build, 162-room voco Bali Seminyak will be built on the brand ethos of sustainability, and designed to stand out from the crowd by offering guests a thoughtful, unstuffy and charming experience inspired by the three voco brand hallmarks – ‘come on in’, ‘me time’, and ‘voco life’. Just a 20-minute drive from Ngurah Rai International Airport, its facilities include a restaurant and bar, meeting room, health club, and swimming pool.

The conversion of the property – which will be the second Holiday Inn Express hotel to open in Bali, after Holiday Inn Express Baruna Bali – illustrates the appeal to owners of accessing IHG’s global enterprise platform and its market-leading loyalty program IHG One Rewards, which has more than 115 million members. For IHG, the signing follows a series of high-quality conversions in South East Asia & Korea, including Sindhorn Midtown Hotel Bangkok, Vignette CollectionHoliday Inn Resort Krabi Ao Nang BeachInterContinental Grand Ho Tram and an upcoming Holiday Inn Express & Suites Singapore Novena.

Japan Airlines

Japan Airlines announces firm order for 21 fuel-efficient 737-8 jets to support fleet renewal

Optimizing JAL single-aisle operations while reducing fuel use and carbon emissions

The versatile 737-8 will position JAL to strengthen its domestic and regional network as passenger traffic continues to return to pre-pandemic levels. JAL intends to begin introducing the airplanes into its fleet from 2026.

“We are delighted to select the Boeing 737-8, a member of the very latest 737 MAX family, to replace our Boeing 737-800s, which make up the largest proportion of the JAL Group’s fleet,” said Yuji Akasaka, president of Japan Airlines. “We look forward to carrying our passengers in the utmost safety and comfort and to moving closer to our 2050 carbon-neutral goals, thanks to a combination of these super-efficient aircraft, operational innovations and new fuel-saving technologies.”

The 737 MAX will provide JAL with greater range and fuel efficiency, reducing both fuel use and carbon emissions by 15% compared to the airplanes the airline is replacing. In addition, the 737 MAX is a quieter airplane, creating a significantly smaller noise footprint than the airplanes it replaces.

“The integration of the new 737 MAX will provide JAL with greater efficiency across its short-haul network, as the airline continues to upgrade its world-class fleet,” said Stan Deal, president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes. “Partnering with JAL to introduce 737-8s into its operations is the latest milestone in our longstanding relationship.”

The 737 MAX family has the latest CFM International LEAP-1B engines, advanced technology winglets and other aerodynamic enhancements to improve performance. More than 50 airlines globally are operating over 900 737 MAX airplanes, which have made over 1.4 million revenue flights totaling more than 3.5 million flight hours since late 2020.

Tivoli debuts in the Netherlands with the launch of the historic Tivoli Doelen Amsterdam Hotel

Tivoli Hotels & Resorts has just launched its first property in the Netherlands.  The Tivoli Doelen Amsterdam Hotel is a XVI century property in the classicist style overlooking the Amstel Canal and is considered to be the oldest hotel in the Dutch capital. The original home to Rembrandt Van Rijn’s famous painting The Night Watch (which was completed in 1642) it hung on a wall inside one of the bedroom suites until it moved to the city’s famed Rijksmuseum.

Centrally located in Amsterdam’s historic city centre, walking distance from the main touristic attractions, the heritage property has 81 guest rooms including seven suites, most of them overlooking the canal, and a new gastronomic concept in its elegant Omber restaurant and bar, inspired by the art works of Rembrandt, who lived very close to the hotel.

Inspired by the Dutch Golden Age and the unique atmosphere of Amsterdam, Tivoli Doelen’s interiors blend an old-world elegance with contemporary service and special Tivoli touches.  The guest rooms and suites offer views over the canals or the city, with the interiors featuring pastel tones with red splashes of colour for a relaxing but vibrant atmosphere, combined with touches of wood. New beds and bed linen provide the best night’s sleep and the marble bathrooms feature special amenities from the French luxury brand Lalique.

For an ultimate Dutch experience, guests can book the 47-square-metre Rembrandt Suite where they can view a perfect replica of The Night Watch, in the room and on the exact wall where the masterpiece originally hung for 70 years. Another interesting room is the Empress Suite that was once the boudoir of Empress Elisabeth of Austria, most well-known as Sisi. With a unique C-shape design to maximise the canals views, the suite has a king-sized bed with Dutch shields on the ceiling, which are a symbol of protection.

On the ground floor and overlooking the canal, Omber restaurant and bar now offers a Mediterranean-Dutch fusion menu.  Inspired by the craftsmanship of paint making and the limited colours Rembrandt used, Omber is a signature colour in Rembrandt’s art. Every dish on the menu contains an element inspired by his colour pallet. The menu also takes inspiration from the artist’s favourites dishes such as herring and pickles that have been recreated by the team with the Dutch name of Rembrandt Pauze. Theslow cooked Dutch Veal with parsnip, carrots and purslane is one of the dishes paired with Portuguese Cartuxa wine from the Alentejo region, giving a nod to the brand’s Portuguese heritage.

For the Omber Bar, several signature cocktails have been created with Jenever, the typical Dutch gin, which was also Rembrandt’s favourite drink. Most of the cocktails are made with a local Jenever producer, Wynand Fockink, which operates a similar distillery process to that used in the Dutch Golden Age. The star cocktail Night Watch is based on an old recipe found in the hotel archives dating back to the 17th century and is made with old Jenever, coffee liqueur, syrup and cherry bitters. Daily at 4:30pm, Omber Bar celebrates the aperitivo moment offering guests some local sips to savour.

Tivoli Doelen Amsterdam helps guests make the most of its canal side location with a range of personalised tours starting and ending at the hotel dock, exploring the vast IJsselmeer, the city canals or Oudekerk aan de Amstel.

With an immersive “In the Footsteps of Rembrandt” tour, guests can visit his home and studio, the gothic Zuiderkerk, his family church featured in his art, and the artists’ guild of De Waag, one of the oldest buildings in the city, which he also painted. Along the way, the guide will share more details about Rembrandt’s life, as well as his connection with the Doelen property, that commissioned his most famous painting, The Night Watch, in 1642.

The hotel has created a partnership with The Rembrandthuis museum iving hotel guests the possibility of booking a very exclusive experience, a dinner, served by the Tivoli Doelen team, in the actual kitchen of Rembrandt’s house. Guests can also book a painting workshop, inspired by the Dutch grand master, getting to know better the ancient art heritage of Amsterdam.

With a journey that dates back to 1933 in Lisbon, Tivoli arrives in Amsterdam in March 2023, the month of the brand’s 90th anniversary, celebrating its sophisticated hospitality with events and special guest experiences to be revealed throughout the year.

Rates at Tivoli Doelen Amsterdam Hotel start from €200.00 for a Superior room including breakfast for two people.
